Default No7 Claret Snatcher

Click the image to open in full size.

I am currently working on a series of Snatchers. This is my No7, and is based on a variant of the Diawl Bach that has been very successful for me.

The pattern is as follows:-

Hook - Size 12 TMC 2487
Thread - Black
Body - Claret dyed Peacock herl (one strand wound in touching turns).
Hackle - Claret cock (leading edge stripped, one full turn at the head, then wound down the body).
Rib - Two strands of fine, light blue holographic tinsel, twisted into a rope (For the Bach, I use one strand untwisted)
Cheeks - Chartreuse Jungle Cock split.

I think that the key to this particular variant is the combination of claret with blue flash. Add to this the irridescence of the herl, and it has got to be a winner when buzzers are around. I have not used it yet, but based on the Bach, I have great confidence already.

All critical comment welcome. For me, I still have slightly too much hackle, and will probably try to drop a turn in future. Hackle fibre length is a bit longer than I care for also.
J.C is riding a touch high, but it is the first time I have used a split.
And yes, I know I forgot to varnish the head (now corrected) before the photo.

Nice wee pattern well done.

Re the fly itself, I would say you have highlighted all of the areas for improvement yourself which is a good skill to have.

Default SNatcher

This is a nice wee fly to try, it's a bit secret but not now, a midlands favourite, with some...

Lovely fly!

I actually use and tie loads of a very very similar looking fly but I use a goose biot instead of JC. Much cheaper.

Sometimes I leave the whole biot on sometimes I trim them short like your JC

I dont strip one siode of my hackles, so thanks for the idea . I'm sure they'll look a heap better now

I tie some up with biots also. I love the sunburst edge ones Artifly (Gerry) does.

Stripping one side of the hackle to give the required sparseness is a tip I picked up from Stan Headley. It makes a huge difference to how the fly looks and fishes.
