Default these books any good ?

I know there is a publication section but i thought seen as they are fly tying books this would be the right place for this post.

Looking at getting these books in the near future

Fly tying for beginners by Peter Gathercole
The fly tying bible by Peter Gathercole
The art of fly tying more than 200 classic and new patterns by John van vliet

so any opinion from those of you who have these, or can someone recommend a book entirely on Scottish fly patterns ( trout flies ).

cheers in advance
James

Default Scottish Flies

Stan Headley's book - "Trout & Salmon Flies Of Scotland" is, in my opinion a masterpiece. Not only does he cover the tyings, but he also provides a short but comprehensive commentary on each fly. It has given me lots of useful tips in tying and when and where to use flies base on his own experience.Hope this helps.

John.

Steve kale put me onto Charlie Craven's book basic fly tying.

Its excellent and starts by explained about stuff like the kit and how they work out the hook size numbers. Its a nice modern book the photography is splendour and its an easy read. There are some great techniques described, my mates and I plan to go through the book on our winter Wednesday night tying sessions.

Its the best tying book that I have for technique. There are better books for uk patterns, but you will learn loads!

Cheers

Andy

A handy reference but a masterpiece ?.... Surprisingly there are actually very few books that concentrate on solely Scottish flies & all other than the reprint of Reids Clyde Style Flies are old. Headleys compilation is probably the best reference in current print.
200 Hundred Popular flies... Stewart is about the best for the traditional minded.
Veniard's 500 Flies has many Scottish patterns within it's content as has A Dictionary Of Trout Flies & Veniards Lake & Reservoir Flies
One of the best but not a tying book is Scottish Trout Flies....Lawrie but will cost you a pretty penny if you can source one.
Lets Fish The Clyde.....Sharp whilst localised is a useful book for fishing this marque & contains loads of patterns. Scottish fishings books & game fishing in particular has a wealth of fine literature but out in out tying not so many.
The American Charlie Craven's books will be good. As a tier he is probably the finest all rounder I have seen in many a year.
