Off the bank the plain white cat booby on a size 10 comp hook - white eyes, fairly sparse and short white mara tail, 16mm flo yellow straggle (essential part) body. I can virtually guarantee a bag full on any of my local waters with this at any time of year - roly poly retrieve on a di7 5 foot leader or fast long pulls is best. Failing that just fo8 it. Easily the most effective fly in my box and I doubt it will ever be beaten. A long marabou tail will get more takes no doubt about that but it can take a lot of messing about to get the fish to lock up sometimes so a shorter tail I prefer myself.

The int comp version is just the same only with the tail nipped down to meet gauge and a white mara wing added too.

I have tried all sorts of variants and different colours but none comes close to the cat booby for me off the bank.

Off the boat blob boobies, cormorant boobies, small eyed cat boobies, green eyed black boobies are my favourites.

Just find something your happy with mate and stick with it - confidence is the biggest part in fly choice most the time in my opinion.

I will add some pics when I get a spare 10 mins.

Sam

i tie one with
fluorescent orange marabou tail
fluorescent orange fritz body
10-15mm of booby cord as a head
orange thread
long shank hook (size 12)

i only use it when fish are not intrested in other flies, you are guaranteed a rainbow with this fly

good luck with your tying

Sam,

For those of us on the other side of the Pond, would you please translate "roly poly retrieve on a di7 5 foot leader".

Looking forward to the photos of your favorite boobies.

Cheers,

Bryan

Made by a Welsh company who make the best sinking fly lines in the world, even better than those produced over the pond. And not far from producing the best floating lines now.

This is my little killer at the minute the den men boob fished on di5or7 with figure of 8 retreve or slow pull of 2ft at a time. I've even taken fish on the washing line method on floating line with either diawl bachs or crunchers on the droppers....
