That's a belter Englander. One of those patterns that could catch any day of the season, any line, any position. You could easily forgive a fish for taking that as a buzzer, upwinged nymph, pin-fry, corixa even. At least a couple, if not all those things are gonna be on the menu at some point in the season on most waters.
I'm a big fan of vague, suggestive patterns like this. The less there is to them, the more they seem to suggest.
One of my favourite river patterns is a small dry hare's ear. Nothing but a wee lump of fur dubbed onto a hook and ragged out. It's the scruffiest piece of cak you've ever seen.... but also one of the deadliest. Never ceases to amuse and delight me when a fish rises and engulfs it
