it will take time my friend ,and if your learning the right way it will take a long time to get to Davies standard ,but the rewards will be worth their weight in gold .

Many sea trout flies are just larger versions of traditional trout wet flies. Also others, such as small salmon hairwings, e.g., Silver Stoat, are relatively easy to tie.

Not sure how much use buzzers are going to be on a river?

Don't worry too much if your flies are a bit scruffy and don't look up to the standard of Davy McPhail, not many get to his level of skill. Scruffy looking flies WILL catch fish. I tied up some flies for the FF & FT mag competition a couple of years ago, I think they were a type of sedge pattern if my memory serves me right. I rejected most of the ones I tied until the 3 required looked o.k. but I kept the rejects and later fished with them very successfully.

It just shows you don't need flies that are competition standard to catch fish, in fact a ghillie I knew in Scotland used to take a new fly from his box and rub it on a stone or handy rock to rough it up before fishing. Give your flies a go you could be pleasantly surprised.
