Default 'scuds'

i recently bought a book- essential flies for trout- thinking it would lead me to some essential flies to try but i have not seen much talk about 'scud' patterns and was wondering if these are an american thing?
theres little talk of common uk flies - diawl bach buzzers and the like.

so question is - are scud patterns worth the tying?

Scud I beleive are simply the way those ex colonial rebellious folks who gave up being british refer to our freshwater shrimp.
Yes their scud patterns work for our trout .
As too buzzers,IMHO the UK stillwater anglers are 15-20 years ahead of the states for chironomid patterns, though some of their adault patterns are good !
Re books ,are you river or still water orientated, would help us recomend better patern books ,or web sites!
