Default JC Challenges

I am tying some cormorants with JC cheeks and my splits keep splitting if that makes any sense ie I take a feather and split it into two cheeks but when I tie it in, it splits further.

Is this technique or the quality of the cape, which is only "budget" to be fair ?

Charlie

I'm having the same trouble. I only bought my first JC cape a few weeks ago off here for 12 quid which was really cheap. I'm puting it down to the quality of the cape. I suppose the old saying - you get what you pay for - is true on this.

This is in no way a complaint about the item I bought as it was clearly marked "budget" quality cape.

Don't worry about it mate... I like it when they do that!

Probably the latter Charlie, although if your splits are slightly on the large side and poor quality then further splits will happen. Trial end error with the size of the splits and thread tension etc should solve the problem. If it doesn't then it's a seriously poor cape.

Is it being tied in on the nail of the feather as opposed to the softer part of it? If the fly is slim adjust your slip of jc to proportion. I used to put far too big an eye on small flies. Its not needed. if you use the natural splits in the feathers and match them up they should be fine. If you are splitting them use a sharp needle to split them.

Dave Downie did a tutorial on it somewhere.
The method i he used was to turn the feather back to front (face side down)and pull a dubbing needle up through the tip of the feather, it always worked.
Forgive me if i am teaching my granny how to suck eggs.

Never had this problem, must be down to poor quality capes.

I use Gerry's budget capes and have never had a problem like this, only after 2/3 fish maybe the eyes split but i dont think the fish mind to much if they are split
