Default vice advice please

hi, im looking for some help choosing a vice- im new to tying and currently using a 2nd hand sunrise vice- im tying trout flies to size 18 and some sea trout flies on doubles. the main problems with the current vice are poor hook holding and unable to rotate fly to do beard hackle and also v large jaws so unable to easily hold the small hooks.
any suggestions to cover these? i was thinking of a scottie weaver vice or a second hand anvil apex. or would a regent suit- budget some flexibility but not over £60 IF POSS
thanks

You can use a midge head for 18's or smaller on a standard AA vice. These cost less than £5.
There's no reason to spend more than £25 on that & a half-decent lever action AA vice.

For that money you cannot beat the Scottie weaver, i use it and love it!

Takes any size of hook, smallest ive used so far is a 22 and it was fine

i like the look of the HMH vices but cant justify this at the moment, i think i might try to find an older english or other quality vice rather than the cheaper eastern vices, has anyone got anything in the back of the cupboard?

for the money your looking to spend a snowbee flymate vice is very well worth considering i have one (not the ball joint) the pedastal normal vice, i can not fault it .

Take a good look at the vices of John Weaver, British built & solid as a rock. They're listed on www.wharefdaleangling.co.uk/Vices.htm

I now use the dynaking pro vice only because i got it very cheap from a friend
on this forum but for years i tied thousands of flies for a few shops ,myself and was even fortunate to win the open & advanced class of the trout fisherman including 3rd palce that year overall in the master class(1994-95) all tied on a regent vice for under £20 quid . I know it gets said all the time but with vices its true buy the best you can afford and pay special attention to the jaws this is the one area through time that will let you down.

I've used the Weaver Type1 vice for a very long time and can recomend it - purchased it from John Weaver at a CLA Game Fair probably more than 20 years ago. Still going strong, built like a brick ty bach.
