Default Possedge

Apologises for the Cr*p name but what else could I have called a Sedge pattern tied with Possom Fur?

Anyway a friend of mine went to Aussieland a couple of years ago and bought me back some Possum fur(on the skin) and its been sitting in my shed ever since cos I didn't know how to use it. Over the last week I have been tying small sedgeswith various materials and I came up with this pattern ( I doubt whether its new)

Hook *14 Fulling Mill A/P medium
Thread 8/0 Wisp Light brown / Fawn
Body Possum under fur.
Wing Possum Guard hairs
Head/Hackle possum Guard hairs

Method

Cut a small bunch of fur from the Possum skin, comb out the underfur ( keep the guard hairs)and Dub teh underfur onto the tread and wrap the body.

Tie in the guard hairs by the buts and cut the wing just past the hook bend
(keep the tips of the hair)

Split the thread and place the hair tips in between the split thread, spin the thread to make a dubbing rope and dub the head/hackle.and then whip finish.

Fog will be posting the photo shortly.

Dick

Default Possum fur

Now I will give you a tip.
Cut a clump of fur off the skin, make sure you are holding the guard hairs.
Still holding the guard hairs, strip out all the under fur (keep this as it is the best for dubbing.
Tie the guard hairs in by the tips on any emerger pattern. Make sure you tie them in where the colour changes to light grey.
Trim the buts (these should be sticking out of the back of the hook) into a small cone.
Presto, you have one of the best nymph shucks you will ever see.

PS: Interesting that he got it out, they generally throw you in jail for bringing out native furs or animals as it is illegal. Still, there a 60 million of them in NZ that are considered a pest so there is still a source.

Thanks for that I will have a go at that

I was thinking of tying a Casual Dress with it but the way the stuff floats ( I am fishing the Sedge with out any Gink) I would have to weight the fly to get it to sink.

As my friend bought the skin in a tackle shop out there I don't think she had any problems getting out of Australia or into England, I'm assuming they had some sort of licence to sell it, as its obviously not an endangered species where can I get some more?

Just Googled "Possum fur on the skin" and the little b*ggers are a problem in New Zealand , they even do a NZQA (which is the same as our NVQ) in skinning Possums, and I found out why my sedge floats , it seems the hair is hollow which is why they use it for cold weather clothing.
