Default First fly?

Hi Guys, im fairly new to fly fishing and have decided to try and start tying my own flies (much more reward catching on my own flies!)

Im going to a still water in dorset on sunday and am keen to get a couple of flies tied for then.
I have never tied before but am very hands on and take to most practical things quickly. Im going to use youtube for the tutorials (sorry if this upsets any of you fly tying teachers, but credit crunch and all!)

What would you recommend I tie first, im thinking bloodworm, buzzers as these seem a good place to start and can be fished this weekend. I have bought a massive kit (someone's lifetime collection of materials and tools) so i have all the gear, just no idea at this stage

Any advise on what to tie or what what is a good 'all rounder' which is not too complex to tie, although i do like a challenge! (but obviously i need to learn the basics first!)

Black and peacock spider or a blob maybe?
Easy to tie if you push all the fibres back.

Look on youtube for blobs

is the blob good for still water fishing at this time of year?
and excuse my lack of knowledge is it a wet fly? if so how deep should it be fished? what does it mimic?
