Spider is on a distinguished road
Default Griffiths Gnat - Variants ?

I posted elsewhere about my first ever great morning on the dry fly and how great it was to hit those high notes following great advice on this site.
The fly i used was the famous Griffiths Gnat.
Did i read someone say previously that this fly can be tied in olive etc and is a brilliant imitator of all sorts of upwings, not just gnats etc , when tied in different couours.

Anyone tried this ?

Yeah, it works too.

I find an olive with dun hackle works well at times and for when you have skittering longhorn sedges over the margins, a ginger hackled affair works a treat:

Since the above entry, I've given the dun version a run out occasionally and it works well when aphids are on the water late season.

Cheers matt, i've become a big fan of Griffiths Gnats since i officially became in some way proficient with dries the other day. The smaller the better i reckon. What material makes up the olive coloured body - dyed olive peacock herl ?

I think that particular pattern uses one of the Masterclass dubbing olive shades. To be honest, any fine staple dubbing would be ok.

I have found tying it with just the hackle, and no peacock herl,
works just as good, if not better.

I've tied them with a red tag and have taken plenty of fish with them on the rivers.

yes.

years ago i fished the green river in utah and the fly that worked best for me was a griffiths gnat tied with a cream color dubbed fur body and the grizzly hackle.

Cheers all

At the moment its the only fly I am using - absolutely deadly, but far more so in the smallest sizes.

I havent tied a fly since the start of the season and wont until the season is well over but these will be highest on the list.

Incidentally I read somewhere that they need to be fished on top of the surface because of the dimples created but in my experience this is pants.

In fact they fished better in the surface film, and were also taken like a Spider just sub surface.

Spider
You are about to be bitten in the bum.
You have fished dry for three days with one fly and think you have cracked it
