Default Makeshift tube fly attachements

Can anyone recommend a quick and simple way of attaching a tube fly to a vice without forking out for a tube fly head?

I have a few from the FFFT/Essential fly comp and would like to tie them up, however only having 4 tubes means that i dont really want to fork out for a head just for a few tubes.

Also, which way round do you tie them? (one end has a lip, the other has a narrower diameter section)

Hope you can help,

Cheers Chris

The lip is the head of the tube.

Virtually yes, set it at a very slight upward slant though - say about 5 degrees. With the needle eye set flat between the jaws.

I've tried needles and the wire "mandrels" in those Vice Adaptors you can buy ( made by HMH and Lureflash etc). The HMH one is OK if the tube is brass, copper or metal and you can clamp the end in it but otherwise I have found none of the needles stop the tube spinning . I saw one suggestion on the Salmon Forums to buy a Pin Vice on Ebay and utilise that in some fashion but as a "one off" event it 's hardly worth doing .

Not sure what make of tube they have supplied but anyway the end with the lip is the front of the fly .Some ready made plastic tubes like Slipstream have a narrower innersection fitted partway to thread the line through with the other end accepting the hook.
Are they plastic tubes or metal? Sounds a bit like a Turral bottle tube ?

Use a paperclip pushed into your tube, and then clamp it in the jaws of the vice. Easy. Job done.

Yeah. That's to hold the hook . I can't see any liner in those tubes to cushion the leader line from the metal .This goes through the metal tube and a short section left protruding and heated with a lighter so it mushrooms aginst the metal of the tube . Does your tube have this or was it supplied seperately .
This will give you an idea of what I mean if it's all Greek to you ..around 4 min 30 secs in
