Default Starting tying...

Ok as a total novice to tying, having never tried - I would like to try knocking out a few flies, I have made my own coarse pike lures in the past and enjoy the satifaction of catching on something you made.

I would like primarily to make some blobs, and maybe move on from there into imitative patterns...

So obviously I'm going to need hooks, thread and fritz to make a blob (I think) but what else do I need in terms of tools and vice's? The beginners kits look to have lots of 'stuff' in them but being an engineer I know there is nothing, absolutely nothing worse than poorly built, incorrect or inadequate tools - so what do I need to get by and what do I need to spend a little more money on?

Thanks,

J.

the internet is full of excellent instruction, check out all the step-by-step instruction over there; on this very site, Fish&Fly, and wherever you find it.
My first piece of advice would be tie with your thread at 90 percent of its breaking strain, if you break the thread now and again, your flies will be solid, proportion is more important than neatness
Happy tying,

Roy

hi there, i make my own lures too as well as flies. your right, as soon as youve bought the beginners lits your looking to upgrade them to better gear. roy has put you on to a good tying site, sign up and you can ask all the questions you need.

you dont need the very best gear, but gear that allows you to work easily. get yourself a good vice, scissors, bobbin holder and go from there.

get yourself a **** pair of scissors and use them for the tough stuff- wire etc. and look after your good pair.

im sure others will add to this

Thanks for the replies guys, any recommendations as to suitable kit to buy? I don't want to be spending hundreds.

J.
