Default Definition of a "sproat bend"?

I'm having trouble finding an explanation for just exactly what this means and how it differs from "normal"...

By 'normal' I assume you mean 'round' bend?

I guess so. Hence the " in my post. I often see references to "sproat bend" or "perfect bend" and unless otherwise specified I assume there is a "normal" (be it "round" or something else).

Steve,

'sproat' is a round bend.

Cheers,
Dave.

I finally found this:

http://www.mwflytying.com/materials/hook_info.html

It suggests that a "perfect bend" is a 'round' bend while a "sproat bend" is 'tighter' or more sharply curved so as to have a narrower relative gape....

That sounds about right going by the pictures above . They are tight bends .

Here is a sproat bend hook http://www.mustad.no/catalog/product.php?id=1829.

The bend starts earlier and the point slopes back up to the eye.

There are pictures of all the different hooks on there so its worth a browse.

Just for the sake of complicating the issue, would anybody like to explain how 'Limerick' and 'Crystal bend' fit into the scheme?

More digging and I found this comparison. This probably shows differences a bit better:

Now the question is "why"?
