Default comp hooks

Hi Mate,

the B160 10's will comply, i dont know about the 8's never used them.

I find the best heavy weight hooks for competition buzzers to be Kamasan
B175's 10's and 12's and B110 in 10's and 12's.

Robbie

Hi Robster

Many thanks for your help, I watched a video on utube of somebody tying a blob on a B160 size 8 and just wondered if it was comp legal. I already use B175 & B110 for my normal buzzers and wondered if there was something heavier or should I be using a lighter hook for normal buzzers

Many Thanks Cockney Bloke

Hi, the B160 8 is competition size, one of the best hooks for small boobies and blobs, in fact a good all round hook with a nice wide gape, never had a problem with them,
Cheers Ken

B160 size 8 is closer to 1/2 an inch than 5/8ths, well within competition limit. Agree with Ken, excellent hook where slightly wider gape required. The 6 is in fact only only a fraction too big and some adjust it by bending the eye down but personally I prefer just to use the 8. Fulling Mill/Scorpion 31510 (short shank special) are pretty much the same and I am happy with either.

Cockney,

It might be a good idea to get yourself a comp gauge. If you've got one, ignore this next two paragraphs.

If you've not seen one, most are a rectangular piece of metal, about 2 inch by 1.5 inch and about 3 mm thick. There is a slot in each side; one for hooks and the other for the overall length of the fly. If the hook will fit in the smaller gap then its ok. I always used to wet my flies before measuring them because they seem to stretch a bit when wet.

I am not sure where you can buy a gauge. Most of the ones used by people from where I live (near Derby) are made from aircraft grade aluminium by lads on the night shift at Rolls Royce.

Once you've got a gauge you can go to a course fishing shop and look at the carp hooks. These are usually made from much thicker gauge metal than buzzer hooks made for fly anglers. They will sink much faster without adding any weight. So long as they fit within the gauge you can tie heavy buzzers that sink fast and are legal for comps.

Cheers,

Dovebob

If you are tying blobs, Try a Kamasan B982. Size 6 is comp legal ,wide gape, heavy metal.

For Heavyweight Buzzers you want the TMC 2457 size 8 or 10. The size 8 sometimes fits in a comp gauge, sometimes doesn't. If it doesn't just tweak the eye down a bit.
