Default proportions

In general what are the best proportion of thorax to body in nymphs? About 2/3 body 1/3 thorax or colser to half and half. Or does it just depend?
How about the body and head in the balloon caddis? I saw an article by Neil Patterson about a caddis patter and he reckoned in caddis it's almost half and half.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

It's a lot down to a. personal taste & b. the types of waters that you are fishing that particular fly on. There's only one hard & fast rule, there's NO hard & fast rules.

Different styles work for different people. Many years ago I remember reading something by Dick Walker. He said he arrived at a fishery & was starting to fish where one guy had just left. Dick put on a pheasant tail nymph and within 2 casts had a fish on. The guy who had blanked at the same spot came & asked him what fly he was using etc & apparently had been fishing a pheasant tail nymph there for 2/3 hours without a touch. It could be down to presentation or any number of other factors.
