Default Buzzers

Evenin' thrillseekers..

From the Buzzers in the classified section... for those of you who might wanna tie yer own. Just don't ask me for any tips though whilst I'm floggin 'em though

Most of these patterns followed on from the 'Brancusi' buzzer, which I entered into last seasons 'Buzzer Challenge', and some of you will have seen before. I tried to keep the form as pure and simple as possible, yet still suggestive of the pupal profile. The hook profile seemed to say it all, and would no doubt catch buzzer feeders fished bare. I don't believe a bare hook is a fly though, or cricket. So, I needed the coloured and translucent thorax though, so I started working out from the hook, rather than onto it, and consequently ended up doing away completely with any 'materials' as such. A slow build up of varnish, and a hint of ink at the thorax complemented the Hayabusa profile in a very pleasing way. The combo of red ink and varnish gives a lovely glow, and when transmitted in the water brings light and life that suggests the surge of blood to the thorax as the buzzer ascends prior to hatching.

Anyway, that's enough of that nonsense.. Yes, they work! I caught many fish on this incarnation of the Brancusi right through last season - being particularly effective in April/May/June.

'Spanthrax' Buzzers

After almost a year of trying to come up with a name, I eventually decided on 'Spanthrax' for this next series.... tied with spanflex, plenty of emphasis on the thorax, and like the anthrax virus...deadly! Yep, terrible name I know, had to give them a name eventually though

Anyway, the 'Spanthrax' series followed on from the 'Jelly Bean', with the addition of the cheeks/ 'wing buds' that appear and bulge on the natural prior to hatching, filling with the surge of blood. Now we can get really specific with the colour combinations for when the fish get picky, or for when you wouldn't trust the simplicity of a 'Brancusi' !

The 'Jelly Bean Buzzer'

Another 'minimalistic' suggestive approach. This one followed on from the Brancusi, but with a bit more meat on the bone, and bringing more colour and translucency to the full profile.

The next batched followed on from the 'Jelly Bean', with the addition of the cheeks/ 'wing buds' that appear on the natural prior to hatching, coupled with the surge of blood. Now we can get really specific with the colour combinations for when the fish get picky, or for when you wouldn't trust the simplicity of a 'Brancusi' !

No, as I said at the top of the thread, the purpose of this thread is to share my patterns with the likes of you... as I always do. There is some background to the patterns, and clear, detailed pictures which will enable any half-wit to figure out the dressings and maybe tie a few. Are you struggling Icky?

The purpose of the thread in classifieds is to sell them.

Not sure if I consider these or your dabblers to be your trademark patterns in my eyes. I suppose the fact that two such contrasting styles are equally brilliant, in my opinion, speaks for itself.

I think they are fantastic, and the wing buds look so real and alive. I also think that it is a pleasure to see them and am really glad you posted them in such detail. Thank you.

As for motives, if anyone wants to check 'all threads started by Scratch' I think they will be obvious. I for one have been greatly encouraged, motivated and inspired by your posts. Impressed as well but that seems a secondary consideration to yourself. Keep them coming.

There a few really excellent and inspiring fly tyers on this forum who I could say the same about for exactly the same reasons. It is what makes this section of these forums so utterly brilliant.

Wow there a great piece of work, how long would it take you to tie one of them? And do you pt a lot of varnish on them?
