Talking Salmon Fly hooks

Dear All,

Just a few questions about salmon fly hooks. I am only starting out tying salmon flies and was wondering if you could recommend certain makes, weights and sizes and where the hooks can be bought online?

I have also been tying some salmon tubes (as cotton buds are dead cheap!!!). What types of hooks do you buy for the tubes? I dont really want to fish trebles and was wondering whether Partridge Big Mouth Doubles would be strong enough for the job?

Look forward to your help.

Cheers

Irish

Hello Irish. Welcome along. I assume that the flies you are going to be tying are for fishing rather than putting behind a glass case for display. So as such & if they are for local use I would approach either your local tackle dealer(s) &/or any salmon fishers or clubs that are in your area.

You will find that at different times of the season sizes & weights of both hooks & tubes will vary. Usually starting the season with larger/heavier sizes to cope with higher & faster water levels, then they "shrink" as the season progresses only to increase a bit in the autumn.

Different rivers will often require a different range of sizes, so perhaps if you let us know where you are going to fish other members of this forum who are in your area can give you more in depth info.

Best of luck

Arkle,

Thanks for that. I live in Cheshire now and will be travelling to the Welsh Dee and hopefully the Eden and Eamont if I am lucky. When I travel home I will be aiming for the River Bann and the Agivey River as well.

Hope that some of this helps?

Cheers

Irish
