Tie in tightly by the stalk & using either your hackle pliers or thumb & forefinger grip the tip firmly. Use the fingers on other hand to stroke firmly the hackle back so as they merge into one from the stalk. Their should be a few tutorials around on the net that might show a few step by step pictures

Gus,
Glad I'm not the only one that struggles with this. Have watched Davie McPhail on youtube do it and he makes it look so easy. Don't you just hate some people.

at first i found this so hard to master as i wasnt getting the full picture and didnt realise you tied it in first iknow what a diddy but when you get the full story of this method it is really easy to do .i think so any way although their are other types of method i cant get and others find easy its just your personal way of tying i think and ofcourse if you are right or left handed can make a few problems too...........

The easiest way is as follows

1. Tie in by the tip good side up
2. Pull back herls to create a christmas tree shape
3. Take the blade of scissors and whilst holding the stalk taught run the blade down the shaft towards you rupturing the herls as you go. Repeat on the other side of herls.
4. Tidy up with your fingers and wrap feather
5. Easier shown than described

I hope this helps
