Post Thread on Threads

I have just bought a sewing kit for my wife from Liddl @ £4.99. Now there are loads of things in it (170 items to be exact) so I thought I would raid it before she got home , a few needles, tape, Scissors pins etc. It has loads and loads of different threads so here is the silly question how do they differ from tying threads, can they be used for flies ? I realise they are not waxed but what is the main difference?

If I can use them I will keep the kit and just get the wife a new ironing board cover instead. Just Kidding.

The lildl sewing kits do indeed have thread - but it's coarse stuff compared with 6/0 of 8/0.

Its also much much cheaper - try tying some scruffy looking flies with it - I have, and have caught quite a few fish with some green mohair (stolen from swmbo's fibrestash) and black sewing thread.

Thumbs up

Much of the best (and unusual) 'stuff' I've collected for the tying bench has come from millinery or 'bead' stores. Not to mention it's a heck of a lot less expensive!

Only problems I've had with sewing threads in the past has been with the cheap multipack type stuff - nothing too serious, but they can be a little weak.

As they're frequently a braided cotton you can't unspin them so easily as a 'proper' tying silk so making smoothly tapering bodies on small flies isn't as easy.

Fabulous range of colours though eh?

Tied some wicked glass buzzers last season using button thread, really thick stuff, I'll see if I can find one to take a pic of.

Cheers,
