Red face Sorting fly boxes out !!!

Hi Guys

Ive been trying to sort out my flys boxes the last few nights with very limited sucess i have a mix of fox boxes, one tiny wee deep fly box, a tiny snowbee metal one, two daiwa wilderness doubles, some cheapy black foam lined......... in them now mostly flys ive tied myself including ,wets, buzzers,a few lures, nymphs, you get the idea.

My heads sore ! tying to figure out what to put in what box i keep loading and unloading them, then changing , .................... When im at a fishery i have my snowbee bag and just chuck four or five boxes in but if im wading i normally use one of the daiwa doubles and the wee deep fox with a few lures, i mustly fish wee stuff.

Im looking for tips from you old codger's who have got the T-shirt

Post Fly Organisation

Hi Englander.
I have recently just done the same my reason being is that I have just started to tie my own flies and I only want to use these now so what do I do with all the rest also where do I put my newly tied ones?????

So my system now is as follows:
I bought some new larger fly boxes just cheap foam ones of various sizes so I could transfer the flies into leaving my better smaller boxes for taking out with me.
I have split mine into different catagories Buzzers, Wets, Dries nymphs etc and labelled them up accordingly.

I have 3 okuma alluminium boxes and 2 orvis which I take out with me these have a selection of flies which are my favourites and are replenished from the Larger boxes.

The large fly boxes never leave home now when they start looking empty I tie up some more.
This way you allways maintain a good stock of your fav flies and your not taking suitcases of flies out just the ones you need which will fit into your waistcoat.

Hope this helps.

I was doing the same last night and have come to the conclusion that I am going to thin out my huge random collection and give those I don't use to some of my fishing mates that don't tie their own.

Of my collection I probably only ever use about 5%.

Now I am starting to float tube I am moving to water proof boxes so things may change yet again but at I have the following:

Dries - use a richard weatley - one side foam and the other glass compartments.

Buzzers - A floating foam box

Caddis imitations - A medium black plastic job

Traditional Wets - a medium red fox box (don't like and may replace)

General nymphs - A medium black plastic job

Lures - a small wooden box (rarely take it with me)

I now have a floating zippered foam wallet that I use for a mix of those flies I am most likely to use during the session...keep it handy while the others are tucked away.

Also have a couple of wooden storage fly chests

A large black plastic box for my seatrout selection

A large fox box of salmon flies (don't like) and two loose boxes or large tubes and mini tubes.

Also a couple of old cigarello tins, foam lined, that I used for my river flies - mainly wee spiders and the odd goldhead (I'm not much of a trout river man)
