Question Cdc Oil

Hi Forum,
Looking for some advice on cdc oil, I recently bought yellow cdc from lakeland and tied some yellow may's up.
The first couple of cast they are great and float no prob's!
But after that they don't float as good, and no amount of frog's fanny seems to help, what I'm wondering is if i apply a small amount of cdc oil onto the fly or do i put it in the bag of feather's?
Any advice on this would be great and has anybody else had the same problem?
Regards Robert

You may find that the flies treated with "Frogs Fanny" will not allow the c.d.c.oil to take into the fibres, if so you could try removing it with a solvent but I doubt if it would work or be cost effective.

I expect the yellow c.d.c. may have lost some of its oil in the dyeing process, you only need very little oil your finger tips to treat individual feathers with. Putting a drop of oil in the bag won't work, as the feathers need to be in direct contact with the oil rather like they would be on the bird.

The oil mearly gives a water resistant coating, and does not add much buoyancy, it's the structure of the feather that holds air and helps to prevent it from sinking. Over use of the oil will cause the fibres to matt together & not resist water & sink.

Mmmm I noticed on thurs mf F-Flies tied with dyed CDC didnt float as well as the 1's tied with natural CDC when we were above the bridge but a quick squeeze in the amadou then some dilly on the cdc and up they popped!!! Not ideal but it worked.

CDC oil goes bad very quickly so its best to get it fresh from the source. Hang a duck by a lanyard on your vest and treat your fly as needed. 'ware of sticking the duck in the "Cul" with the hook as it will bite you in response.
