Nope, no experience of catching a fish with them yet! I only started on the salmon last August and am throroughly hooked already (even been attached to several fish!). I ony started on these flies at the end of the season after getting the inspiration form Leon Links' "Tying Flies with CDC". Experiments in the sheugh next to my house have been successful in terms of seeing them look like they'll do the job!
The dry CDC flies I have used for trout have proven to be relatively robust but to be honest, for all the time they take to tie I wouldn't mind if I just caught one fish per fly. Even if the CDC is a wee bit expensive, for a salmon or sea trout, well worth it, especially if I get my expensive double hook back! And sure, I can then have another ready to go in short order. They are 'just spiders'.
There is quite a bit of stem exposed, given the sparse-fibred nature of CDC, so the Willie Gunns can have 8 -10 windings of four colours and that probably makes them a bit vulnerable to a chomping, but it is the thick end that is used, on account of the fact that that is where the longest fibres are. However, by winding the hackle in front of the thread (towards the eye) and then taking the thread over the top, they would probably hang together even with a bit of a chomp.
They are something else though, especially the Willie Gunn style with the yellow and orange picking up the reflected light from the golden body and then glowing through the overlying red then black. They are so 'alive', thanks to the webbiness of the CDC and the skill of the dyers. Maybe not something to use all the time if you are concerned about longevity but I have no doubt either that they will take a fish. They are partially bouyant with the trapped air bubbles (in the initial part of the swing at least) and generally limited to a size 12 on account of the fibre length so I only envision using them in lower water conditions though I have stripped off the longest fibres to use as wings or tails on a size 10.
Thanks for the thoughts and queries. Appreciated! Always good to get a few positive opinions to be sure I don't end up with a box full of fly failure!
Andy

Hiya,
I was bashing while you were. No need to apologise, as I note above, I want a bit of pickiness! We're evidently on the same hymn sheet, even if we like to dance to different tunes . . .
