Default My starting line up

Got round to tying some flies yesterday for the first time, went with a few spiders and nymphs.
Found that putting the dubbing on the thread was one of the hardest things, just couldn't get it tight and even.
One thing I can say though, it was great fun and it's something I'll definitely stick to. Just need to see if they'll catch some fish now

Can't really see them that well, but they look good to me. Go easy on the hackle on the spiders for the traditional look.

With dubbing, always spin it round the thread in the same direction. When you've got it on wind the thread round the hook until you trap the first bit of dubbing. Then spin the dubbing again to tighten it . You can do this after every wrap for a tight dub or less often for a looser dub. If it doesn't look right, unwrap it and start again.
Often quoted "with dubbing, take half the dubbing you think you need then half it again and you'll probably still have too much."

Top two at the left are crackers, spiders are a bit over dressed for me - good looking flies though, and great first attempt!

Sorry about the photo, uploaded it from my phone while at work.

Thanks for the advice on the hackles guys, I heard not to apply it too thin but it looks like I went about it with a heavy hand

Appreciate the tip with the dubbing Bill, will give that a try in the morning.

Nice wee flies that will catch fish. Lots of good advice and comments already given.
Just to add that, when taking dubbing out of packs/dispensers it needs to be teased apart so that there are more gaps than dubbing then apply to the thread, small amounts at a time though.

Good tip that, I found my dubbing got better when i started mixing 2 different types together. The reason it got better was exactly that, I spent more time teasing it apart to mix it. I now split my dubbing and tease it like im mixing it even if im not.
