I had little or no joy joy with tape Wing ( combined with CDC ) Caddis a la Ollie Edwards last year. My best results came with the Deer Hair Emerger by Bob Wyatt, and the CDC and Elk. In general i found that the fly has got to be at least in the surface film? Anyway, pattern looks a good un , especially the leggy bit. Hope it scores well for you.

ya i guess it depends on what stage of the hatch the fish are locked onto. ive had good results later in the evening with a similar fly but with a wonder wing and cdc thorax. in daylight id almost exclusively fish an emerger or pupa pattern. very rarely would i get results with an adult pattern

Good point Neil, think I had the same experience last season. Mind you I'm no expert, and really only understood what sedges were all about with any form of knowledge last season. Defo try the DHE if you havent already.

Some stuff I learned last season which may be completed rubbish but that i think are accurate:

1. Sedge takes can be much more subtle than the splashy rises constantly referred to in the mags
2. Trout dont seem to cotton on to the arrival of sedges as fast as i would have thought.
3. Most of the time, the emerger and pupa really score well
4. Small patterns work much better than large ones, even if big sedges are on the wing

I think we all love the arrival of sedges in summer. It really is prime time

Incidentally, i have tied a pupa pattern with a newish dubbing which looks the biz when wet - think its called fuzzle dub - its well worth a look guys.

ya i think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head there, esp with the subtle rises. i rarely go about a 16 curved nymph style hook with sedge patters, although for pupa's and emergers i find going a little bit bigger can sometimes help.

I cant remember the bloody underbody for that fly. Its a stretch rubber - marketed by Steve Thornton - bloke who makes the realistic flies?

Curved Sedge Emerger Hook ( Tiemco i think )
Underbody - as above
Eyes - black foam - only about 2-3 mm wide
Overbody - Fuzzle dub
Thorax - Squirral
Hackle - 1 CDC feather , tied in at tip , one or two turns

The effect of this underwater is interesting. It catched light and an air bubble ( La Fontaine theory ) , look leggy, sits high in the water ( although will sink ) , and tapers beautifully. And the CDC will give it movement and help to keep it in the top foot of water, or so i'm guessing

I'm sorry mate, I'm a bit of a technical dinosaur.

I am thinking of sticking a few pics up, but dont want to bother scratch again.

I will put up a request for this .

My digital camera is bust for starters....
