Default Bug Bond Vs Deer Creek

Lots of chatter about the virtues of these resins I have done a little video to compare the two products. I hope it helps if your in the market to get some of this stuff it has changed a way a lot of tiers are finishing flies.

Before you watch the video I have nothing to do with either company and do not sell anything let alone UV resins. So completely impartial, I hope it can help you decide what is the best for you.

Carpy to be honest I still don't think there is much between them. The price is steep what ever way you look at it. I am told that the bug bond torch that I recieved in the kit is not so good. This makes me quite angry why on earth would you sell something that does not do what it says on the tin On the other hand I think with the BB you have a little more time to work the resin as it has a slightly thicker consistancy. The DC sets super fast and seems clear when cured I know what one I will be using in the future.

Hey Simmo, you are using a rather old torch on the Bug Bond. Technology has moved on over the last couple of years from multiple LED to large, more powerful, single LED torches. Various ones of these have been posted on the forum. Likely makes sense to use the same torch on both resins. You've not compared like with like (given the considerable difference in torch output.)

BTW has Deer Creek had the sense to post the viscosity of their resin?

Hi steve, I bought the BB kit from Glasgow Angling quite late on last year around Sept 11 so the gear is not that old. I was under the impression that the diffrent resins cured at diffrent light frequencies that is why I bought the kits.

It would make sense to me to supply a product with the two components to make them work or am I being a bit daft I would not expect to go and buy a ford and be given the keys to VW.

I think as fly tyers we get ripped across the board paying a premium for a hobby. I don't mind paying but I would like to see some value for money.

The new improved Bug Bond uv torch comes in at about £35 making the kit, inclusive of resin, retail at circa £50 compared to circa £30 in total for the Deer Creek.

I have no axe to grind either way but cost certainly led me to the Deer Creek option and judging by the video not a bad decision.

I've posted links before to a suitable torch for £9. It looks exactly the same as the one on the Deer Creek site. No need to pay £35 for a torch.

It's likely worth searching this forum before rehashing through the same stuff again and again.

Thanks for doing that wee experiment Simmo..

Stevekale has written exactly what I was thinking regarding the old BB torch and likewise I'd have liked to see you cure the BB with the Deer Creek torch.
I agree with what you say regarding how recently you purchased the BB and also that you bought both the DC and the BB as a kits.

The thing is, eventually we might be using the BB torch or the DC torch with a resin that's as good as either product and at half the price. I think that's the way it will go.

I bought my bug bond kit at the end of January, and I have the torch from the video.

I put a coat of varnish on my buzzers after the bug bond, it's still less hassle and gives better results than building up layers of varnish, I think.
