Default Dancer name ?

Hi Guys~

We all know the Yellow dancer (yellow hackle/white tail) a reall killer fly/lure you seem to be able to count on it when nothing else works

My mate bought a selction of flys off e-bay in amost was a dancer with red tail black hackle on a long shank 10 hook very heavly hackled he asked me to tie him some up ....so i did but with a lighter hackle and standard size 10 i find they cast better on my 5# i just made two each .......... dont know what or if they have a name, but we now call them " Bowden dancers " as they saved the day yesterday at Bowden springs the water was green ! and it was very hard work indeed, my mate then hooked into a nice fish and shouted it was on those new flies i tied him i was not expecting much as i havent seen many red and black rainbow lures ??

He nailed another on it and i nailed two taking the third on a kate Mclaren variation on the dropper. Goes to show personlly i would'nt have even bothered trying them but they worked yesterday when most guys blanked

Does this dancer have a proper name

You'll probably find that it has several names and several claimants as to its invention.

Red and Black are a very strong combination when it comes to trout attraction. The obvious name, and probably the most accurate, is the Red and Black Dancer. Personally, I like the sound of Zulu Dancer, but hey, it's only a name.

Well done on working out what the fish would take. That's much more important than the fly's name.

Funny we called it a Zulu dancer before our Bowden trip

When tyin' flies for Rainbow waters, I always tie Black Dancers with a hothead bead 'an I'll almost always use one of these when fishing stocked waters.

When I was in Scotland once I fished Loch Lundavra near Fort William and caught a nice brown using one tied on a double hook with a red thread head.

The fly was on a small Salon double but I'd have to check the size.

Funnily enough the trout are supposed to be quite small in this water but Mine was about 1 . 5 pounds. Too bad I ain't got a photo.

Was that an "egg sucking leech" type pattern ?

No, it was exactly the same as above but had a black tail and a hothead bead instead of a goldhead I suppose it's similar to a ESL but I'd call it a hot head black dancer.

I usually fish one on the point with a large Viva at the top and maybe a damsel variant in the middle all on say no.10 longshank hooks. Never blanked on this combination and when the fish are on man it rocks.

I enjoy tying them while on tour.

Willie.
