Lures 8s down to 12s

Wets 10s down to 16s

Dries 12s down to 20s

Buzzers 12s down to 20s

If new to tying, stick to the larger sizes until you become more confident and proficient. Also bear in mind, some fisheries don't allow hook larger than size 10s.

Hi Brett,

I would start with size 10's this will get you started, then Experiment with other sizes if and when you need to but in my opinion size 10 will serve you well.

I agree with MM. There's no point in trying to tie too small flies when starting out.
As for brands - just avoid budget hooks, especially in the small sizes. If the price of the hooks seems too good to be true - it probably is.

Thanks for all the quick replys. I use Tyeeachy hook as they are sold in the shop where i buy other tying materials they are usualy around £6 for 100. I dont really want to buy top end hooks till i have had a bit more practice.

13Rett.

No such thing as "top end hooks" They either work, i.e. they hook and hold fish, or they don't.
The price doesn't come in to it. Except that cheaper hooks are often a false economy. Go for established brands with a reputation rather than cult hooks and fancies.

Avoid "Royd" , I tied on them again today and remembered why I'd put them to one side so long ago! There are other "brands" to avoid too.

Anything you get from reputable dealers like Steve Parton, or Wharfedale etc. will work, similarly, Fulling Mill Scorpion, Partridge, Kasmasan, Hayabusa, Tiemco etc etc are all good brands. Don't look for cheap, rather look for good prices and buying in volume will always help.

Hope this helps

Are "Royd" hooks not any good. I have seen them on the net and were only a pound cheaper than the hooks i use. So didnt see the point for the sake of a quid. But am intrested in your opinion just so i know what to look for and what to avoid.

Many thanks Brett
