Default Travel Vice

Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk _________________________________________Hello all,

I am looking at buying a vice to use when I go away.

I have a HMH sparton vice that I use, but as I have the pedestal version this is quite heavy to take.

The options I have considered are:

1. Buy the c clamp for my vice. Not sure if the clamp is any lighter though and by the time I have bought it (and obviously the case  to go with it) that will be the best part of £70 with postage from the states (i can't seem to find a uk supplier that does them seperatly). For that money I was thinking I could buy something else and then not have to take the desk vice down every time I go away.

So,

2. C&F Marco polo travel kit. Just not in my budget and kids are refusing to sell their kidneys.

3. Veniard travel vice. Preferred option as it looks like what I need and price is great. However not been able to see one so would be buying blind, therefore unsure of the build quality and no reviews to see if it is worth getting.

4. Renzetti apprentice vice. Realistically more than I wish to pay at around the £90 mark but would stretch to it if the Veniard or other recommendations not any good.

5. Snowbee Flymate Clamp version. Seems to get some pretty good reviews at a not too bad price. Not sure how small and light this is.

Your thoughts comment and reviews much apprieciated.

I have a Snowbee Flymate, with the extra ball-joint, and it's very portable, I regularly fire it in my bag to take with me when I'm going anywhere (I've only been tying a few months so still got the bug bad). The only criticism I could make of it is the jaws annoy me, when removing a fly sometimes the far away jaw (from a right handed tiers viewpoint) can go beyond the limit of the screw holding it in the locating dimple (for want of a better word) so I've just put a bit of elastic round the left hand side of the jaws. This also allows me to work with neater adjustments on both screws, it just doesn't look pretty. Though I paid £25 for my vice from GAC, and for that money i think it was an absolute steal. It will take a hell of a lot of money to get something noticeably better.

I have tried my mates Veniard Rotary vice, and it's very very poor in comparison.

The snowbee's a good gripper, but the ball join will fail, and cause much swearing in the not too distant future!

If you cant find a saperate c clamp then just buy a cheap vice from ebay.
No doubt it'll do to clamp your hooks while your away and if not then the clamp alone's a cheaper option than another vice..... And you get to use your favourite hook nipper on your holls.
If you need a larger dia' bore to fit your shaft into just drill it out........... probably made of monkey metal so shouldnt be too hard.

All my hook tying is on two ty-master supreme vices............... about £20 each and i've never had a hook slip, or blamed the vice for a poor fly.
They rotate 360 deg (though not true, as in the axis of the hook), but I can still see the other side of th fly, without suffering the indignity of having to raise my butt to peer over!

I'd still trade a testicle for a Law vice though!

Rod

I would consider the Snowbee Flymate Clamp without the balljoint. As far as I know there is a model with the ball joint and one without.

There certainly is, but it's also easily removed with the allen key which is supplied. Though I've gotta say I do like the extra range of movement it gives me.
