Default Fly Tying Trays

Do any of you use them? I for one always get a slating for clamping the vice to the table, leaving mess including feathers, hooks and sometimes the odd varnish stain.

So I've been looking at fly tying trays - there's not many about! Other than specifically made fly tying desks and tool caddies, which really isn't what im looking for.

What do you use?

Kieron

I have a free standing pedestal vice so no clamping. I use an A4 cuttingboard with some brown paper over for those messy jobs. Then I have A4 size sheet of white foam for putting tools and materials on. I have a waste tray at the bottom of the vice for all cut bits then have a waste bin on the floor. Still get stuff on the work area top

I have a folding kitchen bar stool. It's just big enough to clamp a vice and a lamp to, with room for tools and basics. I tie on the sofa in front of it with a tray with immediate materials on it and the rest in a couple of large plastic boxes and a tool box on the floor.
One advantage is that I have to keep reasonably tidy as I have no room to spread out.

I remember seeing a thread on here with plans for a workstation/board that sat on a table top. On my phone so can't search for it. Will try later.

I have one of those little folding tables which I clamp my vice to and sit down with a toolbox, A4 drawer cabinet and a few bags of stuff and tie away whilst watching/listening to the TV. The mess I create is taken care of by the hoover before the 1 year old eats it.

Use a biscuit tin, shiny side up and sandwich it between vice and table.

I tied off the corner of the kitchen unit and a tray for ages. Didn't have room to swing a cat never mind leave materials lying around. I eventually persuaded her to let me set up a wee desk. Loads of room now.

These take some beating for what you need and many other uses too.

DREMEL® Project table (2600) - Dremel

Mine cost about £25 a couple of years ago ........... it's a mini table top Workmate that will easily take a clamp vice and they are easily customisable to take tools and suit your needs. I use mine on my knee or in the car.
