Default Chadwick 477 Wool

I have just bought a full card of Chadwick 477.
I am not sure if I have been ripped of.
What do you think it is worth?
The card is full and the only damage is where a price has been pulled off and a cut in one corner.

I saw this stuff really cheap on a fly tying materials website somewhere recently so I wouldn't be paying a lot for it in that case.

The cheep stuff isn't Chadwicks. Usually a wool mix and not yarn. I've seen prices from £3.50 per half meter to £7 per half meter. Then £35 for a so called full card.

Rusty,

I help out at the London branch FDG auctions and most years we have a card or two of genuine 477. There are two things to bear in mind.

Firstly the wool came in at least two different size cards. The smaller card 10.5 cm x 6cm with a has much less wool than the larger card 12cm x 7cm
I'd guess around half as much wool. Incidentally it is a wool/nylon mix in 85/15 per cent ratio.

Secondly the price is determined by how much you want it. The cheapest lot I've seen was £34 and that one is in my tying room, the most expensive was around the £90 mark with two excited bidders. The average price over the past 5 years seems to have been around the £65 to £70 mark and I'd probably pay that if I needed it.

The most recent on ebay went for £125.00 for a full card. There are always a few chancers selling it by the yard or even by the 30cm length. If I really wanted to tie with it, then I'd buy a full card and use it. If I wanted to invest then I'd look elsewhere, this was not an uncommon product, most homes had Chadwicks in various colours and there is probably lots still out there.

I've looked for alternatives and recently bought two large cones of similar coloured yarn that does a reasonable job. The price? £2 per cone for several thousand yards.

Hope this helps
