Default Mites Eating my Flies

Hi All,

Just joined the forum after looking at all the excellent contributions of flies posters have shared on these pages. They're nearly as good as the one's i tye

Joking aside, i know this topic has probably been covered numerous times and if so just delete the thread, after i have an answer.

Problem is these mites that eat my flies and turn them to dust! I have heard of the naphthalene crystal superglued inside the box etc as a deterrent but wondered if anyone had a perfect solution, apart from epoxy buzzers

One thing i noticed is that it's only my foam lined boxes that seem to be affected, although they're used more often as a preference. Is that the answer though, use the likes of fox fly boxes, or does the box type not matter?

Thanks in advance.

Al

Default Re: Mites Eating my Flies

Hi & welcome. 1st, the type of box shouldn't matter so long as it has not got the draught excluder open foam in it, as this will harbour water & "mites".

Genrally it's a storage problem, if you store your stuff in a shed/garage etc you're far more likely to get problems. Once a fly has been attacked, it's, in 99% of cases useless. to try & safe those which are, as yet not showing signs of problems, put them separately on a plate at least 1/2" apart from each other & give them a 10 sec. blast in the m/wave. You could do the same with PLASTIC boxes, even if they have a metal hinge pin. Then, provided the flies didn't spark, put them inside the box & freeze it for 24hours min. take out & repeat a day or so after.

Glueing naptha/etc inside isn't really nessercery, but you could use a good organic insect repellant spray on them, but leave them at least a month before fishing them.
