All really depends on what your matching mate, won't go far wrong in a 14 though.

I've seen them on a size 10 If I'm using them to prospect a stillwater, I go for a 16 or 18.

One fly I wouldn't want to be without.

Why use such tiny flies for prospecting Bill...? You might be making things unecessarilly difficult for yourself. In the absence of risers or any obvious hatch,I think its best to start off big and see how the fish react to them first. They might be just in the mood for 10s,who knows.....and they're a bit easier for us to see.If they are turning up their fishy noses at the big flies ,we can then fine tune accordingly.....

For shippies ,I find a 14 B-400 the most usefull size.

You're probably right WJ. I have the same discussion with my lad when we we're out after Carp and Tench.

I just have more confidence in a small fly - and on stillwaters, I'm inclined to think that the fish have seen too many large Klinks and Owls, drifting by. If I thought that the fish were not interested enough to come up for a small Shipmans in the film, then I would be going down to them or putting on a Hopper or Daddy to try and get them up rather than stick on a big Shipmans.

However I suspect that it could be very different on a loch after wild brownies.

However, I should have made it clearer to Tel that it is my own personal preference.

I think it was your use of the word "prospecting" that threw me Bill.I use that term if there are no fish showing.Tiny flies are not my first choice to find out if the fish will come blind to a surface fly.I start off with a more noticable pattern size (not neccesarilly a shipman) then tweak the size and profile accordingly to how the fish respond.I dont find 16s and 18s are much cop when trying to force them up blind.
Shippies are at their very best in a light ripple/flat when the fish are sipping at emerging buzzers.
