This was in a collection of flytying odds and sods I picked up a while back on eBay. I've no idea what it is though...

So what have I got then?

maybe a home made half hitch tool, i have seen something like this at an auction a while back. they called it a half hitch fly tying tool

I'm pretty sure it's a device intended to 'simplify' the knotting of pheasant tail fibres for use as legs in hoppers etc.
You might eventually succeed in tying a knot with it, but simplify the job? - No way.
Looks home made, but the commercial job is no better.

I think that's it - there's a Lureflash version towards the bottom of this page which looks very similar.

I can't imagine how it works though...

Use a gated boilie needle. I couldn't knot legs to save my life until I tried one of them.
