Default Diawl Bach swap.

The ubiquitous DB has been a bogey fly for me. Up until this Monday I had never caught on one. I was tying up some Clifton mini-lures last week (a precursor to the Cormorant, with a peacock body, wire rib, fluo green tag and orange head) and decided to experiment with a Diawl Bach variant, removing the marabou wing and adding a tail and beard of cock hackle fibres.

This Monday I had a window of opportunity to fish my local 'fast-food' fishery, which is small and well stocked and only five minutes from home. I tied an Apps Bloodworm on point, because that had worked well in Winter here in the past and on the dropper I was going to tie my usual black buzzer but I saw the Clifton DB and thought 'what the heck?'. First cast my line tightened as it arced around in the stiff breeze and I fully expected to see my Apps in the scissors of a surprised Rainbow, but it was the Diawl Bach. The pattern was repeated with the next four fish, including a couple of fit Brownies. By then I'd replaced the point fly with a Clifton but that remained unmolested. I managed to lose them both to a snag but a size 10 Holographic ribbed DB continued in its stead. The sun came out and the action slowed but after three hours I'd had eight and all to the DB on dropper. I tried all sorts on point but they only wanted the DB. I'm a convert!

So, enough of me waffling on. Who's up for a Diawl Bach swap? A deceptively simple pattern with many variants. I'm going to close the book after ten tyers, so get your names down. Eleven of the same fly to me by the 1st of March please, one set for charity. Has anyone taken up the LTC baton since Steven (mrtrout) exited?

I'll update this list as necessary.

1. SharkeyP- Clifton Diawl Bach (Completed)
2. Paramedicpete- Copper Rib Diawl Bach (Completed)
3. Kjenkins- Olive UV Diawl Bach (Received)
4. flytire- tbc (Received)
5. Marks- Red Holographic Diawl Bach (Received)
6. Arkle- Red gold ribbed Diawl Bach (Received)
7. Denzil3009- Green Diawl Bach (Received)
8. Holo- Rootbeer Diawl Bach (Received)
9. FunkyFlyTying- tbc
10. Sarg- Blue Holo Diawl Bach (Received)

Tight threads!

Hi Norm,
I had tyers from California and Ireland in the last swap I organised. The work-around we had regarding the self-addressed envelope problem was to include a bit of cash to cover return postage. The Californian guy eventually had them posted to a friend in the UK he was visiting and paid with a couple of pound coins. The Irish guys sent a few Euros, I did the conversion once I'd weighed in the return packages and the surplus went to the charity. I spent the Euros on holiday. Where there's will!

Hi Sharkeyp - I'll try not to incorporate the welsh colours into the diawl..

I'll tie an olive uv diawl
