Default Rat-faced McDougal

Another dryfly pattern that originated in the good old US of A I believe and a highly floatable one at that. I'm sure it could be useful over here when the sedges are on the go and would be good in fast flowing streams. I've used elk hock for the tail and coastal deerhair for the body aswell as cree hackle tips for the wings, I think the original might have used grizzle. Tied on a kamasan B175 size 12 (I know not the preferred hook but I think this thing will be enuff to keep it afloat).

I seen a guy take 3 fish all in the 2lb class off the Clyde one day.
When he showed me the fly it was a rat faced mcdougal.

Great fly and lovely tye too. I would be thinking of trimming the hackle off underneath to get it to sit in the film and the right way up, but thats just me.

Nice Mark.
It's in Taff Price's book Rough Stream Trout Flies. The drawing in there gives a much more bulbous body but yours looks the part. It's noted as a fast water dry and I can see it working well there.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks alot everyone for all your comments and insights and info all accepted with great enthusiasm and I look forward to giving it a blast come the spring. I have seen this fly tied with up to three hackles but I just used a fairly long saddle which gives a fairly good effect.

Oh and sorry Spencer for nearly gettin you into trouble with the wife but I'm sure she's used to you gettin all worked up with all these top shelf fly pics

Yep (if grizzly and brown cock hackle are wound together - grizzly hen tips for the wings).

Nice tie. Wingman, the only suggestion I could make is to pack the deer hair more densely (for a cork-like body) and use wider hen tips for the wings (as wide as the hook gape and one shank length long) so that they are more prominent.
