looks bulky on hook but i would imagine that it`s just the angle the fly is sitting at - colours ok though

Not bad Hugh, nice colour combination, the french partridge could be tied in so that its more going back at less of an angle. When you tie it in which should be by the tip, you need to squeeze the hackle fibres back before you wind the hackle to get them going backward at an angle. or hold the fibres back while you wrap the hackle. The bronze mallard needs to have all the tips aligned before you tear it off the feather so when you cloak it they will all be the same length. You also need the sharpest pair of scissors you can lay your hands on (Ed at Fordsflytying has superb tweeser scissors which I find perfect for this and anything else) to trim the BM after youv'e cloaked it as close to the thread as possible and that should take care of the tatty bits your'e getting at the hook eye, but good attempt, keep at it.

Very nice fly. The hackles are maybe a bit long (body and front). Davie McPhail ties a nice dabbler on his youtube instructions - he mentions that before tying in the bronze mallard he waxes the tying thread to help "roll" the fibres around the hook. I find that this really does help.

John.

Thanks for the feedback - amazing how the variations in technique work better for some than others. I just tried the Finney SBS, where the cloaking turned out to be intuitive for me, nice cloak, small head, problem solved.

Much appreciated as are all of the SBS videos

Hugh
