Default Dog / Cat hair as dubbing material.

Hi,

I am new to fly tying and I have a possible silly question. Why is dogs hair or cats hair not popular to use as dubbing material? I havent saw any patterns which used cat/dog and I am wondering the reasons for this as it is readily available and is basically free.

Is there any real drawbacks with using this as dubbing? I am aiming to tie nymphs and wet flies so the only thing I can think of is the dog hair could possibly smell like wet dog

I have looked on the internet and there are some posts about it being used by American tiers but would appreciate your advice.

cheers

graeme

A lot of anglers use groomed hair off either a dog or cat. Some animals have better fur than others. Even Sottish salmon flies use dog hair. There is a salmon river beat owner who is famous for amazing his paying guest by tying a salmon fly with squirrel fur, dog hair, and his wife's hair. He then goes out with it and promptly catches a salmon. It's one of his party tricks.
