Have Gillaroo got to be released?

Only in the fishing comps but there are big arguments at the minute between some anglers who claim the gillaroo is just a plain old trout thats been eating snails and the like.

I'm not getting into the argument, but I love to buy into the myth behind them.

It's no myth Mike. Gillaroo are genetically different and there are very few people that can distinguish between them and brown trout in melvin.

HMMMMMM, do they have a gizzard.

Maybe yes, maybe myth. hmmmmmm

According to wiki they do.

No gizzard, no, gilly. Is it as simple as that.

Or is it better to say.... If in doubt, its a gillaroo.

The debate goes on.

The colors vary, I've caught some that are golden all over not just the belly.
In years past when keeping them in comps was the norm, the gillaroo trout would stick out a mile when hung up with the black sonnaghan.

Its good to put all wild trout back if you can, to help preserve stocks, and the length limit is good as well.

I think they are a different from the other trout, but talking to a very well known and respected member of the Garrison AA who has forgot more about fishing Melvin than I will ever know, said some professor has proved that the gillaroo is genetically just a Brown trout.

But as said! me as an angler and having caught a few and eaten them in the past, they are different.

There was a sign somewhere saying "Please release all Gillaroo because of a diminishing stock" I didnt keep it, in fact i only kept 3 or 4 fish, i had well over 100 - But i suppose the debate will go on- Each and too their own, but i think a gilaroo IS a gilaroo
