Default Problem with new vice (vise?)

Hi,
Sorry to bother you all but looking for some comments. Just bought myself an inexpensive pedestal vice (it's my first one) that seems to be quite well recommended, but, the 'beaks' on the jaws don't match up lengthwise (about 1 mm overlap) and when the height extender is extended up, higher, the stem becomes unstable. I appreciate the instability should not be there, but are the jaws meant to match up exactly?
Thanks for looking, and hope you can advise,
Regards,
Del.

Hi Jim,
It's a Snowbee Flymate (no ball joint) with pedestal.

i have the exact same vice and have no stability problems at the length i have it extended but when fully extended it does tend to wobble slightly when the screw is located in the hole in the stem, the jaws should be the same length but mine has a slight overlap and ive never had any problems holding the hooks in it ??

Hi Delray,
I have a clamp version of this vice.
The **** closest to the point of the jaws is used to adjust the distance between the jaws to match the dimension of the hook only.
The **** at the bottom is to fasten the hook and to remove the hook, always loosen the bottom **** first.

To match the jaws together- the top **** ( close to the point of the jaw ) is threaded through both sets of the jaw and the bottom **** is not.
so when setting the hook and your beginning to tighten place your finger behind the jaws to level the jaws out.

The reason you must always loosen the **** at the bottom of the jaw first is to prevent damage to the thread and **** at the front of the jaws.

I hope this makes sense, hard to type down easier to show.

All the best.

Sorry i didn't know it was going to edit out the words, let's see... turning attachments- screws

Thanks Bruce; that does sound like mine. I didn't want to start using it in case it was a faulty one. Actually, just called a buddy who has recently bought same one, and he said exactly same thing as you mention and I have noticed.
I'll put it back together and see if it poses any probs while actually tying.
Regards,
Del.

your welcome , just bring the stem down a little bit more and problem solved ,and if you need a couple of spare O rings for the back of jaws let me know or just send me a stamped addressed envelope and i will put some in for you as they will go eventually ,but otherwise a great little vice for the money

Cheers Bruce. I used it today and it was fine. In fact more than fine and extremely portable when 'she who will be obeyed' shoved me from one place in the house to another.
I may take you up on the 'o' ring offer. I'll p.m you,
Thankls a lot,
Regards,
Del
