Default Imitation: Bibio marci and B.pomonae

Hi
I am posting a pic of my favourite Bibio imitation.
I use the black legged version (B.marci) in spring, and the red legged (B.pomonae) in late summer.

Bruns Bibio

Thorax: Fly-Rite, #2, 7, 6.
Wings: Clear wing, or Raffene, Coloured greyish with a marker pen.
Wingcase: Black Flyfoam (any kind of thin closed cell dense foam will do)
Legs: Micro Round Rubber (Spirit River)

Nice!

Never thought to use 'Micro Round Rubber' legs either, I presume Spirit River supply them ready knotted?

Hi, Corky - it is pre-treated with floatant, but I usually soak the entire fly in Dry-Dip before fishing.

Hi, Emphemerella - unfortunately they don't come ready knotted, but it is fairly easy to knot them yourself because of the flexability.

I was tying at the Scone Game Fair a few years ago and a guy approached me with some very similar patterns, the kit for which he was pushing. I thought "Dog's bollox!" and lashed some together.
A month or so later I was on Leven, just under the Vain Farm, when I encountered a big fall of Heather Fly (Bibio pomonae) and a substantial movement of fish. I changed to a dry fly rig, stuck on a couple of the Dog's Testes and fished for about an hour with them.
The trout jumped over them, played keepie-uppie, swirled underneath - in fact everything but eat them. I switched one to a plain ordinary Bibio Hopper, and caught two fish on it before the rise stopped.
So far, browns and rainbows have showed great interest in the Mutt's Nuts but I have completely failed to catch a single fish on them. They are going for a long sleep in the garbage can.
Hate to be a wet blanket and all that, but sometimes the fish just don't see imitations the way we do

Hi Maybe my English sucks, but I did not understand I think.
Anyway, the fly I present up here is a very proven pattern for Bibio species.

But I agree, if I understand you right, that flies that seems fine, isn't fine until they have been tested, tested and tested again. And again That is my philosophy, too.

André

hi Stan, the word on the street is there's another fly you've failed to catch on Leven [the doobry] is this pattern also going for a long sleep in the garbage can.
PS. i've managed to nail a few on it.
