Default An olive for rivers that you wouldnt be without....

Hi all

Am starting to tie up a few Olives as the season is getting closer now.

So far I have tied some of the brilliant Slim Deer Hair Sedge ( it is used for olives by Bob Wyatt ) , and the good old F Fly.

I'm not a huge fan of Klinks, as I get a lot of slashed rises at them.

What river olive ( for Large Darks etc ) would you NEVER be without ?

Reason I ask is that I am doing some JT Olives a la Jeremy Lucas with the split tails and stripped herl , and they are a bit fiddly and CDC can be quickly hammered by slime....

So I guess I'm asking, how many of you are HUGE JT Olive fans ?

Is it a "must have" in your opinion ?

And the difference between this and an F-fly is?

I'm partial to the CDC loop wing emerger...

Noticeable differences Steve I feel

- Wing on an F Fly is more sloped towards rear o fly - JT Olive is more upright
- F Fly body is thread , Jucas's olive body is stripped herl
- "JT" Olive is a longer fly, with tails which are supposed to be the same length as the body I think ( maybe more ? ) , but F Fly has no tail ( in the original as far as I have read / seen )

I love CDC , until a greasy mouthed trout takes it

Any other takers chaps?

( Jeez I'm turning into a pedantic bo11ocks, i'll be killed here in Munster )

The F fly is brilliant and am gradually becoming a CDC devotee but the Kites imperial will always be in my fly box. A superb early season fly...

Tried the JT olive but still prefer the F Fly...

I have now knocked up a few JT's and recovered some from last year. I find it tricky to fully split the tails, but they look tidy with that stripped herl body.
Wouldnt be without the F Fly after last season either, and need to rattle a good few up in size 18. Black too....

And still no segde pupa does, or Bob Wyatt DHE !

I wouldnt mind, but I only have about 12 fly patterns in total, and they are all going in a small C+F box , bar the sedges....

Also a fan of the CDC loopwing emerger. Spider if you don't like CDC try an olive comparadun or some parachute patterns. I'm a big fan of CDC though.

The JT Olive is my number one go to dry fly when the Large Dark hatch is in full swing, it caught me plenty of fish last spring. I've been tying up a few emergers to represent the Large Darks similar to Bob Wyatt's Dirty Duster, tied on a Kamasan B100 size 12/14, Grey Squirrel/Hare's Ear dubbing on the abdomen, ribbed with yellow thread & Grizzle/Med Dun Hackle clipped underneath. So I'm hoping they do the business next season.

I'm a huge fan of the Sparkle Dun. For the LDO I use brownish olive and a variant with yellow/olive body.

Last year on the upper Clyde in early season the strong winds which plagued us all spring wind was crippling the olives and many ended up under the surface. The fish were hard on these waterlogged adults and a largish clydestyle wet was the best fly by far in these conditions. It took me quite some time to figure that out.
