Default Easy Thread Nymph

Personally, I think thread should be more widely use for river nymphs. It's quick and easy to created the perfect taper, comes in enough colours to treble the nymph count of a river and looks great too!

I've had some recent success on the below fly for trout and grayling this winter, but im sure it will be a great, easy baetis pattern... So many variations, not enough hooks!

I've used Uni Thread 8/0 - I think its lt olive. I've never had such a problem with these threads, although I leave all flies dry out in a patch before putting them back in a box...

Hi Kieron

I have had some success on a similar fly but without the hackle and varnished. Tied it to get down deep with smaller flies and it seems to be working really well. As you say dead easy to tie just hackle tail, thread and a tinsel collar and then varnish over.

In the faster water they are designed for I dont think the fish get too long to decide whether or not to take it so just hit it.

HI Dan,

I too have had great success on a similar pattern to the one you described, but in small sizes such as 18's and 20's.

They are perfect for cutting through faster water, and also dropping through slow water to get to deep feeding fish with ease. I think tiny flies are underestimated in fast water

Just about to email you.

Sounds about right mate, I have mine on 16's with 2.5mm beads at the moment but will give some 18's and 20's a go. The Taff fish seem much more willing to take the small flies and they are such a pleasure to tie and fish.

What hooks do you use for your tiny flies mate? been tying on the SLDs and 103BLs but just got some grip hooks and they seem pretty decent.

I agree with you Keiron, the free swimming nymphs have smooth streamlined bodies which thread imitates perfectly and it does equally well for emergers and dries although buoyancy can be an issue.

I usually use a contrasting thread or fine wire to suggest segmentation as it looks more natural to me, it probably makes very little difference to the fish.

Using floss silk makes more sense IMO, though it seems to have gone out of fashion in the last 20 years or so.

I usually use Phil Holdings FTB dry hooks, basically same as the partridge SLD's but a lot cheaper!

Contrasting the thread as a rib is good, I like to use flexi floss if im ribbing these patterns as it gives a very prominent segmentation and still keeps the fly slim. But as you said, I don't think it makes a hoot to the fish... sometimes.
