This is the best I could get it. Looks like an Olive to me.

It looks like an Olive Upright to me (Rhithrogena semicolorata), from the photo it does look like the hind wing is much larger than that of Large dark olive. Also, the head does look like it is in the form of the Heptageniidae family (flattened stone clinging mayfly). I think I can also make out the characteristic dots on the femur (thigh) of the dun which only the upright and the true March Brown possess (its definately not one of these!). Sometimes colour is not the best character to use due to slight regional variations. With it only having two tails, it rules out the chances of it being a member of the Leptophlebiidae family. Hope this helps!

If I was going to gamble on a dull coloured dun, then I'd take your Sepia, raised to a Claret, and call you with the true March Brown Rithrogena haarupi but, as I said, it's not dull coloured; so I'll stick with my original Baetis rhodani bet.

Your call?

I too must agree with 'PiB' and '.D.'

The late Oliver Kite often fished the Brecon area in early April. He recorded that the Large Olive is still the predominant fly on the Usk, as it was in March.

He devised a very pretty fly to imitate them.

Hook size 1 New scale (#13/14 current sizing)

Silk: purple;

Hackle: honey dun;

Whisks: greyish brown (later dressings stating 'honey dun' are incorrect);

Body and thorax: heron herls from an undyed dark blue primary feather. A picric dyed variant is also useful;

Ribbing: gold wire.

When freshly dressed, and before oil and water have darkened it to a most realistic-looking shade, this dressing is very pretty indeed in 'Imperial' purple and gold.

I feel there's no way that is either a sepia dun or any of the 'march browns' as its wings are not veined in the way of those species. I still say upright!

...most realistic-looking ....

very pretty in 'Imperial' purple..
A nice pattern.

Has anyone got an 'emerger' or parachute dressing? I'm sure it'd be very effective.
