Default Greenwell's Parachute

Starting to get through the dry flees for next season...

Greenwells Parachute
Hook - Tiemco BL103
Tail - Furnace Cock
Thread - Yellow Uni 8/0 waxed with Coblers wax
Rib - Fine gold wire
Thorax - Squirrel
Hackle - Furnace Cock
Wing Post - Areo Dry Wing

Got a couple of Qestions as well if anyone can help - what are the best threads for tying dries from size 14s down to 20s? I usully just se uni 8/0 but I find this thread tends to bulk if you rush things on the smaler flies.

I have heard of people using powerthread or nanosilk. what are the benifits of these threads and do they help keep flies slmmer?

Also what flies do you tend to use uni threads over UTC apart from splitting the thread for dubbing?

Cheers
Martin

Hi Martin. Not a bad fly at all.
Uni 8/ Is a good thread for small flies. If you want a very flat thread then UTC 70 denier or the Nano silk. Down side, UTC and Nano don't take wax too well. Nano also looses it's colour as it's gel spun. Do a search for SHEER threads 14/.
Going back to your fly, I prefer a grey wing post, tradition and all that.

Hi WF thanks for the feedback.

Have you tied much with the sheer threads? They look ok like.

And yeah true lol I tie them in both yellow and grey. yellow for an easier sighter.

Cheers
Martin

I use UTC for varnished buzzers where I want as slim a body as possible. It's also nice and smooth. Apart from that and split thread stuff, it's UNI for me. I do have a spool of clear 17/0 somewhere for tiny flies but can't remember what the brand is.

Hi Folks,

Cheers for the info.

Has anyone tried the Roman Moser power silk? would that make the difference?

Cheers

Hi Martin.
I use Sparton Micro for all my flies, and I tie well into five figures a year. The primrose is perfect for Greenwells. I have attached a picture of a Beacon Beige type, shows how a slim body can be achieved, though it is on a 16, you will notice it is a lot bulkier in the hackle and thorax than your well tied little 'bad boy', the reason is that, it is for the upper reaches of the Dove and Manifold, where there are lots of little waterfalls and 'bubbly' water, it helps to 'keep em up' longer

Hi TBL,

Thanks for your thoughts and nice fly there.

I guess the best thing is to experiment with a few of the suggested and see what gives the best results without over complicating things.

Cheers
Martin
