Nice first post young man, welcome to the forum. I've only just started tying myself so I can't answer your question I'm afraid but I'm sure someone on here will be able to help.

Hi Trouty' Well you've come to the right place. Lots of great advice. Also many thanks for pointing out what a tightwad your dad is we can all give him some proper stick now

I dont tie myself, but if you use the forum search facility you will find what you need. Here is one helpful thread.

Hi Troutyoungteam

£40 will get you a pretty good vice that will last quite a few years. The Weaver Ultimate Type 2 Vice is available from sportfish.co.uk for £32.99 + postage and seems reasonable quality to me.

The most important advice I can give you is to purchase the best quality tools that you can afford. Good quality tools (you do get what you pay for) will last a lifetime and make your tying pleasurable but cheap poor quality tools will cause nothing but frustration and certainly not encourage you to sit at the vice for any period of time.

The most important tools you will use are scissors and bobbin holder. A ceramic bobbin holder will NEVER cause the thread to break through wear (no accounting for heavy handedness though!), but a cheap brass tube model will often cause thread to fray. Fine point scissors such as the Veniards model will cost about £10, but will perform MUCH better than a £3 cheapo - don't get me wrong, the cheapo models are perfect for cutting tougher materials such as wire etc.

Looks like you need to raid the "Bank of Dad", but if you buy properly, you won't be replacing them in the near future.

I don't know where you are located, but joining your local branch of the Flydressers Guild is always a good move

I wish you all the best in learning the fascinating art of flydressing.

welcome trouty to the forum and my advice to you is buy a regents rotatable vice this will last you many years and is excellent value at £19.99.It is all you will need for tying and later on in life if you feel flush and want to buy a more expensive one which to be honest only looks good as this vice will do just the same job,so be it.With the rest of your money you could then buy materials or hooks.I used this vice for many years and it is the only one I would recommend for people starting tying and even more experienced aswell but its down to the individual in the end.

Hi young trouty, I have a Snowbee flymate vice thats only been taken out the box but never used, which you can have free of charge. That way you can spend your pennies on materials.
Drop me a PM if you are interested.

Hello trouty, I also use a regent vice it does me, had this one a long time it's good for me. Now I have a wee tip for you, when you go into tackle shops for your materials etc, when you browse through the many materials and dyes don't rush to the counter to pay for them, take them to the window and let the day-light shine on your items you may find some of the items don't look that good any-more just put them back on the shelves, and you can look in another shop and if you keep this idea in your head you'll come out of the shops with pounds in your pocket in stead of pennies.
