Default GW hackle

Sorry to post three on the trot but new here and I think it's a great forum.
I've been looking through the tying list and number 118 (Cruncher) calls for a Greenwell hackle.
It's been so long ago in a galaxy far far away, but I seem to remember an article in Trout and Salmon suggesting that a furnace hackle placed on a sheet of paper and dabbed with a black magic marker down the centre gave a pretty good alternative.
Has anyone tried this or is it just a piece of brown stuff?

johnt,

A furnace hackle already has a black "stripe" - black list - down the middle of the feather - it's the webby part of the feather.

A brown hackle can be turned into a furnace with a black pen but be careful that the pen is not too new or the ink will flood into the whole hackle and you will end up with a completely black hackle!

Better to invest in a furnace hen cape or saddle which will see you in good stead for a whole range of patterns.

Kind regards

Phil.
