Hi Big tel

The two vices are as different as chalk and cheese. It all depends what you want out of a vice. The Regent design is ok and has served tiers for years. The Flymate is a good vice in the more modern style which is more popular with tiers. At the end of the day they're just hook holders. If I had the choice I'd go with the Flymate but that's my choice.

Have just bought myself a Fly-Mate, pedestal edition without ball joint. Seems pretty decent.

What is the function of the spring wrapped around the rotating bit?

I believe the spring is a material holder.

Post Re: vice advice

Hi Bigtel I've been tying flies for over 50 years and have only had 3 vices in all those years, the first was a fixed jaw vice by Veniard which I used for over 30 years, it served me well until the jaws got too worn, I then had a Regent rotatable vice for nearly 15 years which was very useful as my previous vice didn't rotate, I now use a Snowbee Waldron that I treated myself to and expect it to see me out. Depending on what your prepared to spend I'd go for a good quality rotatable vice as they allow you greater access when tying.

I just use one of these.
They're cheap, good enough for me, can handle anything & last for years.
