Can I just throw this into the mixer!
Does the Ho-bbler, Hobbler with the body hackle really benifit from the legs?
I think it would do just as good as a dabbler.
And the hobbler or skinny dabbler without the body hackle would benifit from the legs as they can be seen by the fish, and thats what its about the fishes view not ours.
Nice ties Scratch they will catch with or without legs.

Mike

Great looking flies - Colours on both flies are very similar to the "Dark Mackerel" - A well established fly for Sea Trout, Brownies and Bows - Great pattern on Leven and Loch Awe - I would have no hesitation fishing your Hobblers with or without the legs.

I'll take that as an admission of your pedanticism.

I think yev got a bit mixed up here everyone - I think this fly of yurs (fortbhoy) is just a variant of Stans dabbler variant (THe skinny dabbler) and yev just added legs to it, Lawrences fly on the meanwhile was still a dabbler but yet another variant, Scratch posted soeflies called (Soldier Palmer Hobbler) They are Hobblers, full and thru.

OK, gents time to sit and listen, or at least read.
In Dec 2009 FF&FT I done a two page feature with five Hobblers.......Half dabbler , half hopper. I'd never seen or heard of one before I whacked them together. They had been kind to me during that season on Brenig and since and I think Scratch done OK on one I sent to him in the Lexus final on Chew that same year. I know Lawrence Finney very well, excellent tyer but as far as I know I'd christened them 'Hobblers' in that article.............Does it really matter that much ?
I would say.......you don't just sit at the vice and say you've invented a fly, you road test it first. Don't know about the dozen or so experts or resident inventors on the forum.........do they ever catch on some of the nonsense they put up ?
Happy New Year fly inventing.
Be good,
George Barron

That's a good point, George. I would estimate that the greatest motivating force behind the display of patterns, minor variants and replicants on this site is ego.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. I don't really care what is the motivating force behind good work - the stuff which gets your mind turning over - but a lot of the stuff posted on here is worthless, ego massage, it greives me to say.

When you meet someone who needs encouragement, give it to them! Why? Because more people die of broken hearts than swelled heads. And that’s true whether they live in a mansion or a mud hut. The story is told of a little boy who wanted to play darts with his Father. He said, ‘Come on Dad, let’s play darts, I’ll throw and you shout “wonderful...!” So think the best, believe the best, and express the best towards others, for your words can help to shape their destiny.

I'm sorry but I just had to share that with a few folk. Those who seem to know it all and care so much that we all abide by certain rules. Can I also add that from all the ramblings about names there still isn't that backing desired. The majority still seem to think "who cares??!!" I know I do, but then I'm well aware how short and prescious life is!! (I know I have made a spelling mistake, but do you know what? I'm going to leave it, because - what does such pedantry matter? You all get what I'm saying, you know which word I'm going for! So what that I didn't quite get it right!

My cousin loved to tie flies and he was good at it too! He also liked to come into this community and share them with people. I believe when we create anything and share it with others, we are sharing a piece of ourselves and sometimes that's not always easy. Perhaps in future when people have nothing positive to say, then why not say nothing at all? Just a thought

Also to those with all the knowledge, how nice it would be to impart their wisdom on to the younger generation rather than diminshing their efforts!

To all those who wrote positive comments, including constructive criticism - thank you!

Or you could look at it another way.

You have Stan Headley, George Barron and Rob Denson contributing to a thread started by Stevie, and he was holding his own.

It must be still raw, but there was no malice or discouragement there.

Best

Mike
