Default Crippled duns

Sometimes trying to catch trout feeding on crippled duns in slow water can be as daunting as fish feeding on canis!

I used this pattern to great affect in Italy, Im sure it will put a few fish on the bank in a rusty, burnt orange colour too!

Hope you like it - Its a simple and easy fly to tie.

I've seen it plenty of times when anglers are fishing for 'cripple' or 'spinner' feeders and are having no success or just the odd swirl. The most important thing in my eyes is not the colour, but the position on the wings on a spinner pattern.

Having them positioned on the top of the hook, rather than flat across the shank is key. This gets the body to sit in on the film and the wings flat on the surface.

My tip is to build up a thorax before even thinking of the wings, then position the wings on top of the thorax, instead of winding the thorax (dubbing etc) around the wings.

Hope it's of help to some.

Kieron

Thanks for the comments guys, the fly fishes the right way up (hook in the water) I forgot to mention the use of black foam as the thorax cover, cut so it protrudes over the eye, this seemed to be a great feature for the fly, as it does represent the bulging eyes of a spinner.

For the wings I used 'Web Wing' which is a woven material, very strong and robust, floats like a cork too. But, does sometimes break - some flies only last 3-4 fish - but im not too worried as the wings (to me) make the fly.

I tried cutting the shape of the wings with a scissors, but found a size 18 wing cutter to be much, much easier and more consistent.

Cheers, Keiron

ps. Burhan, theres always a few flies in the box for you!!

I tie a very similar pattern with aero wing but will take your tip on building the thorax first on board!
